Freeing the Heart Through the Liberating Insights of the Four Noble Truths Class Series with Ying Chen

June 19 - July 10, 2025

Teacher

Ying Chen

Format

Four 2-hour live-online weekly sessions

Description

In the Buddha’s first discourse — Setting in Motion the Wheel of the Dhamma — he shared the profound teaching of the Four Noble Truths and the twelve insights that accompany them. As he offered this to his first five disciples, one among them, Venerable Koṇḍañña, experienced a “dust-free, stainless vision of the Dhamma,” declaring his liberating insight as the following:

“Whatever is subject to arising is subject to cessation.”

This moment earned him the name Añña Koṇḍañña—Koṇḍañña Who Has Understood.

This story illustrates the liberating potential of the Four Noble Truths—not merely as a philosophical framework, but as a pathway to inner freedom. As Phillip Moffitt writes in Dancing with Life,

“The Four Noble Truths are not just a summary or creed, …but an actual practice of insight and realization—a teaching in how to live wisely.”

In this course, we will explore these timeless teachings through both direct experience oriented meditative practices and reflections from the Pali Canon suttas and Dancing with Life, each session will offer:

  • Guided meditative practices
  • Contemplative reflections
  • Group discussions and Q&A

Together, we will deepen our engagement with the Four Noble Truths as a living, breathing practice that frees the heart and reveals the Dhamma in our everyday lives.
